Spanish

By offering a Pre-K through 8th grade Spanish program at Mission Basilica School, we help our students become lifelong learners and globally aware citizens.  We provide a comprehensive study not only of the language, but also of the culture, geography, history, music, and people of Spain and Latin America.

In Pre-K to third grade, students are exposed to children’s books, songs and games, and also to basic vocabulary in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Formal Spanish instruction starts in fourth grade. In fourth and fifth grade, students review the vocabulary that they learned in the lower grades and start transitioning towards a more contextualized use of the language.

Our middle school program offers Spanish two times a week for sixth grade and three times a week for seventh and eighth grades. Our students use a Spanish 1A and Spanish 1B high school series.  It is a comprehensive program that includes a textbook, 2 workbooks, audio CDs and DVDs, and that aligns with the standards for foreign language learning.  When leaving Mission Basilica School, our students are prepared to go to Spanish 1 Honors or Spanish 2.  Some prefer to take Spanish 1 again to avoid overloading their first year in high school.

Our foreign language program at Mission Basilica School is fun yet extensive; students enjoy learning about the language, other places and cultures, and they start using what they learn right away in real settings.  Making sure that our students become lifelong learners and globally aware citizens in a diverse world is a priority for the Spanish program at Mission Basilica School.
