Sports & Cheer Programs
Sports
Dressed proudly in Red and White, the Swallows of Mission Basilica School have established a respected presence in South County private school athletic circles. The sports program that dates back to the 1930′s has evolved into a well-rounded array of teams for boys and girls in grades 5 through 8.
Beginning in September, the Fall season features boys flag football and girls volleyball at two levels: the A teams for 7th & 8th grades, and the B teams for 5th & 6th. Our award-winning cheerleaders cheer them on enthusiastically. Our greatest participation is in mid-winter when 8 basketball teams hit the hardwoods. They play their home games in the recently renovated gymnasium that features glass backboards, Senoh volleyball standards, a new maple wood floor and in 2005 red safety wall pads that accentuate Mission’s many championship banners.
The sports year concludes in the spring with girl’s softball, boy’s volleyball, coed soccer and a track meet. Volunteer Coaches are the backbone of Mission Athletics with help from parents, siblings, alumni and parishioners considered a bonus to the programs.
Fun for the kids is the end result strived for by our Athletic Director, Mr. Pat Forster, himself a 1958 graduate of Mission. To this end he composed a fight song in 2004, sung to the tune of the Washington and Lee Swing.
Cheer
The Mission Basilica School Cheer Squad is comprised of 7th and 8th grade students. In addition to cheering for the many top ranked sports teams at Mission School throughout the year, the squad performs at several school sponsored events such as pep rallies, Family and Friends Day, the Swallows’ Day Parade and the first day of school assembly.
Tryouts for the following year’s squad are held in the spring. Cheerleading is a year round activity.
