Mission Basilica School students have the opportunity to participate in the very special Altar Server Ministry assisting Priests & Deacons at Mass. Mission Basilica School offers a very unique setting for Altar Servers to serve in the Basilica, a National Shrine and one of only seventy four Basilicas in the United States. Servers may also be able to serve in the historic Serra Chapel. Built in 1782, the Chapel is the oldest Church in California and the oldest building still in use in California.
Mission School students are trained to serve Mass, beginning in 5th grade. Weekly, students from Mission Basilica School grades 5-8, participate as Altar Servers at the Basilica’s 8:30am Friday Mass. After receiving training, during their Religion Class, 5th grade students are teamed up to serve with older students which provides them with additional “on the job” training. 7th and 8th grade students may also serve funeral and memorial Masses, helping grieving families through a difficult time. Our students can also choose to serve at weekend Masses.
