Clubs & Activities

The Academic Junior High Decathlon is a competition for students in grades 6-8. There are ten events. Two are collaborative team efforts – a logic quiz with 20 rigorous thinking problems, and a super quiz with 50 multiple choice questions on five broad academic themes. The remaining eight events test individual knowledge of the Roman Catholic doctrine, English, Literature, Science, Mathematics, Current Events, Social Studies, and Fine Arts (Art and Music). Awards are given for individual and team performance, and the winning school team from each geographic diocese competes in a state championship the first Saturday of March each year.

Battle of the Books (or “BOB”) is a reading program for students in Grades 4 and 5. The program encourages students’ love of reading as they read, study, and discuss twenty books from various genres. At the same time, they will prepare to compete against other local schools at the Battle of the Books Tournament. MBS placed 1stin 2020 and 2024, two teams placed 1st and 2ndin 2021! Over the course of 5 months, students are required to read a book a week. They meet Tuesday mornings before school to take a quiz on the book, complete a log to turn in, and review the book as a group.

The MBSSJC Choir is open to 5th - 8th grade students who have a passion for singing. Rehearsals take place every Thursday from 3:00 to 4:00 PM. The choir will perform at various special school events, including UN Day, Christmas celebrations, and more, showcasing their talents throughout the school year. The School Mass Ensemble is open to 5th - 8th grade students who are gifted in singing or playing an instrument. Instrumentalists should have prior experience and be either currently taking lessons with a private teacher or have taken lessons in the past. Rehearsals are held on Tuesdays from 3:00 to 4:00 PM, and the ensemble will perform during school Masses, providing a beautiful musical backdrop for these sacred events. Students in Middle School will be able to join our Junior Mock Trial Team. Students will compete at JSerra Catholic High School against various junior high schools in the area and will participate in mock trials in various courtrooms around the campus! 

Student Council helps share students' ideas, interests, and concerns with the Student Council Advisor. Students help raise funds for school-wide activities, including social events, community projects, and helping people in need.

Mission Basilica School uses Creative Kids Playhouse to produce two musicals each year.  Students in kindergarten - fifth grade have the opportunity to participate in our Lower School Musical which usually takes place in the fall. Students in grades sixth - eighth grade have the opportunity to participate in our Upper School Musical which usually takes place in the spring. 

Our newest club on campus, Yearbook Club,  involves writing, proofreading, taking photos, creating and editing pages, and more! Students work directly with Mrs. Bullock and Mrs. Watson on completing various sections of the yearbook.
